Undergraduate Internship Program

General Information

The Finance Honors Internship Program offers eligible finance majors the rare opportunity to apply classroom learning to address realistic financial issues in an organization. In addition, internships offer students the possibility to enhance employment opportunities after graduation. Students are encouraged to pursue an internship, for credit, when it adds to the quality of their learning experience. All interns must:

  1. Attend meetings with the Office of Career Planning and Placement and the Internship Coordinator for the Department of Finance;
  2. obtain course approval from the coordinators;
  3. keep daily logs of activities performed;
  4. complete written assignments; and,
  5. complete post-internship evaluations.

Internship Credit

FI 421 Finance Internship is a three credit hours course that fulfills the requirements of a finance related elective, thus requiring the payment of tuition.  Most internship positions are paid positions.  Each student is required to work for a minimum of 20 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Grading is based on five elements:

1. Supervisor’s Evaluation 40%
2. Activity Log 10%
3. Internship Journal 25%
4. Internship Project  20%
5. Attendance  5%

Eligibility

Senior standing with an overall GPA of 2.7. Students must have completed nine credit hours of finance courses before the beginning of the internship period.  Internships are open to superior full-time students, selected by the finance faculty, who have completed their junior year.

Graduate Internship Program

General Information

Full-time MS Corporate Finance (MSCF) and MS Global Financial Analysis (MSGFA) candidates who enter the program with no professional-level work experience in the field of finance have an opportunity in the MSCF or MSGFA Internship respectively to acquire a measure of practical experience in a financial environment as an integral part of their education.  The internship affords these individuals a chance to assess their personal strengths and weaknesses in light of the demands they are apt to encounter in their prospective field.  In that way, it provides them with a base of some experience with which they can realistically plan the start of their careers.  In addition, it often gives interns an opportunity to demonstrate their professional potential to prospective employers.

Candidates should expect to be involved directly in securing their internships. The Graduate School, the Center of Career Services (CCS) and the department internship coordinator stand ready to assist you in contacting potential internship sponsors. Candidates are also encouraged to demonstrate their own initiative in finding internship opportunities.

Internship Credit

Subject to the approval of the Graduate School, the internship experience may be used to satisfy three credits of elective requirements for graduation. Tuition for the internship is the same as tuition for regular courses.

Eligibility

The option of participating in an MSCF or MSGFA Internship is open only to full-time MSCF or MSGFA candidates who enter the program with no professional-level work experience in the field of finance.  To be eligible, the student should be well into his or her graduate program, have taken at least four finance courses at the 600 level or higher and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.
